Indian Samosas can be easy to make with the help of wonton wrappers.  These can be baked, steamed, shallow fried or deep fried.  Dip these beauties into savory chutneys or eat them plain.  Make these ahead of time and cook them later or freeze them.  Enjoy!

I once knew a woman from India who was a fabulous cook.  She liked to take short cuts for everyday cooking.  The one short cut I can still remember was using wonton and egg roll wrappers for dumplings instead of making the dough.  She made some fantastic Indian Samosas using wonton wrappers and deep fried them.  As your teeth broke through the crunchy outside, your tastebuds were met with a mix of hearty meat and savory spices.  Sauces were served on the side for your dipping pleasure.

Today, I am sharing with you the recipe as I remember it but baked instead of fried.  These were fun to make with my daughter who was home visiting from college.  She is the hand model in these pics.  She has the tiniest hands.

Whenever I want that quintessential Indian taste to a recipe, I reach for a spice blend called Panch Shoran.  It’s a pre-made mixture of common spices used in Indian food.  I can usually find this in an Indian store but if not, it’s available online.

Description

Indian Samosas can be easy to make with the help of wonton wrappers.  These can be baked, steamed, shallow fried or deep fried.  Dip these beauties into savory chutneys or eat them plain.  Make these ahead of time and cook them later or freeze them.  Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (may use any ground meat like chicken, turkey, lamb)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 Tbs Panch Phoran
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 bunch of cilantro chopped
  • 5 green onions
  • 35-40 wonton wrappers
  • cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 375F.
  2. Brown meat in a large skillet over medium heat until cooked through, drain meat and return to skillet.
  3. Add next 5 ingredients and cook for 2 more minutes over medium heat, stirring often.
  4. Add cilantro and onions, stir and cook one more minute, set aside to cool.
  5. Scoop 1 tbs of meat mixture onto wonton, wet two sides with water and fold.  Press the edge to make a seal.  Set aside on a rimmed baking sheet.  Repeat until all ingredients are used.
  6. Spray samosa dumplings with cooking spray and bake in oven until golden brown.
  7. Serve with your favorite savory dipping sauces.  I used an apricot chutney this time.
